UTSA wraps up regular season on Friday with home match against Lamar

SAN ANTONIO ? The UTSA men’s tennis team will conclude its regular season on Friday against Lamar and seniors Robin Fernandes and Andre Moreira will be honored for their dedication and contributions to the program prior to the match.

The Roadrunners bring an 8-12 overall record and 3-2 mark in Southland Conference play into the 10 a.m. match (changed due to impending inclement weather), while the Cardinals stand at 7-10 overall and 0-4 in league contests.

Fernandes and Moreira joined the Roadrunners in 2006 and had an immediate impact.

Moreira, a Campinas, Brazil, native collected SLC Freshman of the Year accolades and was a first-team all-league selection after posting an 8-5 singles record and five wins in doubles competition. He posted a perfect 6-0 mark in conference action.

Meanwhile, Fernandes led UTSA with 10 singles victories his freshman season to go along with eight doubles triumphs. The Johannesburg, South Africa, native posted a 6-2 SLC record in singles play. He was unable to compete this spring due to injury.

The Roadrunners enter Friday’s competition tied with Southeastern Louisiana for third in the conference standings. UTSA holds the head-to-head tiebreaker with its 4-3 on March 21.

“Our guys are going to be ready for the match,” head coach Dr. Oliver Trittenwein said. “Lamar is having a tough season and might come out and try to be spoilers against us, but my guys are ready. It’s the last match of the regular season and it’s Andre’s last match at home. A win going into the conference tournament would give us some confidence and momentum.”
