Williams named Southland Conference Athlete of the Week

Junior Teddy Williams posted the world's fastest 100 meters time last Saturday.

FRISCO ? Junior All-America sprinter Teddy Williams was named Southland Conference Athlete of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday.

The Tyler native recorded the fastest time in the world this year when he peeled off a wind-aided 9.90 in winning the 100 meter dash at last Saturday’s UTEP Invitational. Williams eclipsed the previous best of 9.93, recorded by 2008 Olympic Champion Usain Bolt last month in his native Jamaica.

The two-time All-American and six-time SLC Champion already held the school record with hisprevious personal record of 10.16 that won the 2008 league title and, even though Saturday’s wind was above the legallimit for NCAA qualifying purposes, he already had punched his Midwest Regionalticket with a 10.26 posted at the Texas Relays two weeks ago.

Williams also helped the 400mrelay team run a season-best 40.68 (fourth place) in the first track event of theafternoon, running the second leg along with sophomores Kevin Hunt, JohnMatthews and Emon Foundren.

UTSA is back in action on Friday when it returns to Austin for the second time in three weeks at the Texas Twilight.
