Sophomore Danye Holmes fanned eight batters in a two-hit shutout on Wednesday.

HOUSTON ? Sophomore Danye Holmes tossed a two-hit shutout and freshman Amber Anderson hit her fourth home run of the season to help lift UTSA to a 1-0 victory over Houston Baptist in game one of a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Husky Field. The Roadrunners (22-21) gave up three unearned runs in a 4-1 loss to the Huskies (16-19) in the nightcap.

UTSA, playing without the services of senior Leanne Risberg and juniors Kelly Cato and Rudi Cantu due to injury, rode the left arm of Holmes and the bat of Anderson, both of whom were making homecomings to the Greater Houston Area, in the lidlifter. Holmes, a Sugar Land native and Kempner High graduate, struck out eight allowed just two hits in hurling her third shutout of the season. She ran her record to 9-8 overall and lowered her ERA to 2.14 in her 10th complete game of the year.

Meanwhile, Anderson, from nearby Alvin, went 2-for-4 with a home run to lead the UTSA offense. She led off the fifth inning with solo blast to right center field, her first long ball since March 15, in what proved to be the only scoring by either team.

Melissa Wright had a double for one of the two hits for HBU off of Holmes, while Beth Evans (6-8) allowed just the one run on five hits in the loss in the circle.

The Roadrunners also struck first in game two, plating a run in the top of the third. Junior Krista Sitka singled to right center with one down and moved to second on a base hit by sophomore Emily Humpal. Sophomore Kristin Kappler then lined a single to center to push Sitka home.

The Huskies tallied four runs on three hits, including three unearned by virtue of a pair of UTSA errors, in the fourth. Line Skelton led off with a single to right field and moved to second on a bunt single by Kali Johnson. UTSA then threw the ball away on a double-steal attempt, allowing Skelton to score. Following a walk to Sara Corcoran, Wright doubled down the left field line to plate Johnson with the go-ahead run. Kaitlin Southerland then reached on a mishandled ground ball that scored Corcoran from third. Lorin Leatherwood then lifted a one-out fly ball to right center that scored Wright from third to make it 4-1.

UTSA managed nine hits off Jammie Weidert (7-7), who struck out seven and gave up just one run in seven frames. All nine hits were singled, including two apiece from junior Chelsey Chapman and freshman Kristin Wehmeyer, as the Roadrunners stranded 11 base runners, compared to only two for the Huskies.

Humpal (11-10) took the loss for UTSA, striking out eight batters and allowing just one earned run on three hits.

UTSA returns home to host Cal State Bakersfield in a battle of the Roadrunners this weekend at Roadrunner Field. First pitch in a doubleheader is set for 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, followed by a single game at noon Sunday.
