Freshman Caitlyn Ivy's single in the ninth sent UTSA to its second consecutive extra-innings win in Friday's opener.

SAN ANTONIO ? Freshman Caitlyn Ivy singled home junior Rudi Cantu in the top of the ninth inning to help lift UTSA to a 3-2 victory over Texas State for its second straight extra-inning win on Friday evening at Bobcat Field. The Bobcats rode the right arm of Katie Garnett to a 4-1 win in the nightcap to split the Southland Conference doubleheader.

With the bases loaded and one down in the second extra frame, Ivy grounded an 0-2 pitch from Texas State starter Chandler Hall through the right side of the infield to easily plate Cantu, who led off the inning by reaching on an error, from third base. Freshman Ashley Kappler, who reached on a perfectly-executed bunt single, was gunned down at the plate on a good throw from Taylor Hall.

UTSA (21-19, 14-9 SLC) struck for a run in the top of the first inning. Cantu drew a leadoff walk and back-to-back singles by Kappler and senior Leanne Risberg loaded the bases with nobody out. Freshman Amber Anderson then drew a walk to force the first run in, but Chandler Hall got out of the jam with a pair of punchouts and a popup.

The Bobcats (27-13, 15-5 SLC) fought back to take a 2-1 lead after three frames, plating a run in the second on an RBI-single by Ali McCormack in the second and a safety squeeze bunt by Chandler Hall in the third.

The Roadrunners knotted the score with a run in the sixth. Anderson drew a walk and moved to third on a double by Ivy. Sophomore Danye Holmes then drilled a one-out, full-count pitch to left field that was mishandled for an error, easily scoring Anderson from third.

Holmes earned the win in relief, striking out four and allowing just two hits in 4.2 scoreless innings. Chandler Hall struck out 11 but walked five and allowed one earned run on eight hits in falling to 17-7.

Ivy and Kappler led the Roadrunners with three hits apiece, while Alex Newton and Taylor Hall collected three and two hits, respectively, for the Bobcats.

UTSA left 11 runners on base in game two against Garnett, who fanned four and allowed one run on seven hits in improving to 10-5 on the year.

After getting out of bases-loaded jams in both the first and second innings, Texas State plated two runs in the bottom of the second on a scary play in right center field. Chandler doubled to right center and McKenzie Baack singled to put runners at second and third with one down. McCormack then lifted a ball into the power alley on which Cantu and Risberg collided trying to make the catch. Both runners scored and McCormack went all the way to third on the play.

The Roadrunners got one run back in the next half inning as Anderson, who had two hits in the game, led off with a double to left center and scored from third on a base hit to left by junior Krista Sitka.

The Bobcats responded with two more in the bottom of the third on a run-scoring single by Taylor Hall and an RBI-double by Chandler Hall.

That would be more than enough run support for Garnett, who retired 12 of the final 15 batters. Holmes (8-8) took the loss, allowing four earned on six hits in 2.2 innings.

Game three is slated for noon Saturday.
