Women?s golf wraps up shortened Lady Mocs Intercollegiate in third place

Senior Laura Baker shot an 83 and tied for ninth at the Lady Mocs Intercollegiate on Monday.

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. ? Seniors Laura Baker and Allie Jordan each turned in final rounds of 83 and tied for ninth place to lead the UTSA women’s golf team to a third place showing at the weather-shortened Lady Mocs Intercollegiate.

The event was cut from 54 holes to 18, due to snow, wind and cold temperatures on Monday.

“The conditions today definitely ranked in the top three most difficult ever played or coached in,” head coach Carrie Cole said. “The mix of low temperatures, strong wind, snow and sleet were almost unbearable at times. It was more about attitude and survival than golf today. We made a lot birdies considering the conditions and difficult greens. I do wish we could have played the full event for our seniors, Allie and Laura, but I am pleased they finished our regular season with a pair of top 10s. Now we are looking forward to getting back to San Antonio to prepare for conference and continuing to keep working hard the next few weeks.”

Baker posted a 39 on the front nine, while registering a 44 on the back nine for an 83 on the day. Meanwhile, Jordan shot a 42-41=83 to finish in the top 10. Junior Madison McClain fired a pair of 43s for an 86 and tied for 22nd place, while junior Shelly Martinez trailed McClain by two strokes. Also in action was freshman Bruna Spengler, who capped off her day with an 89 (45-44).

Kentucky claimed the team title with a score of 325, edging out host Chattanooga by one stroke. Mallory Blackwelder from Kentucky won the individual title with a round of 77.

The Roadrunners return to action in two weeks for the 2009 Southland Conference Women’s Golf Championship in Kinder, La.
