UTSA drops a pair to McNeese State on Saturday

Senior Leanne Risberg had three hits in Saturday's twinbill.

LAKE CHARLES, La. ? Senior Leanne Risberg and junior Krista Sitka recorded three hits apiece, but McNeese State used six extra-base hits to take a Southland Conference doubleheader from UTSA by scores of 5-2 and 4-3 on Saturday afternoon.

The Cowgirls improved to 11-15 overall and 7-1 in the league, while the Roadrunners fell to 10-10 and 5-3.

Bethany Stefinsky (6-8) fanned 15 and allowed just two unearned runs on three hits in earning the win in game one.

A Molly Guidry RBI-single gave McNeese a 1-0 lead in the first and the Cowgirls pushed their advantage to 4-0 with a three-run third highlighted by an RBI-triple from Guidry.

Rachel King went yard in the next frame to make it 5-0 after four innings.

UTSA finally broke through for a pair of runs on a Sitka base hit in the top of the seventh, but Stefinsky got out of the jam with a strikeout.

Sophomore Dany? Holmes gave up four earned runs on seven hits and struck out in four innings in falling to 5-4 on the season.

McNeese struck first in game two, as Dani Price doubled home Claire Terracina in the bottom of the first.

UTSA took its first lead of the day in the third. Holmes drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on a double by Risberg. Sitka then doubled home both base runners to make it 2-1. Sitka moved to third on a single by junior Kelly Cato and scored on an infield error to give the Roadrunners a two-run advantage.

The Cowgirls grabbed the lead back with a three-run fifth. Guidry singled and scored on a home run by Heather Mosser to knot the score at 3-all. Liz Morvant then gave McNeese the lead for good with a solo blast with two down.

Michelle LaVoie picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on six hits to run her record to 4-2. Freshman Amber Anderson gave up three earned on six hits in five frames in falling to 1-2 on the year.

Game three is set for noon Sunday.
