Freshman Caitlyn Ivy hit two home runs in Tuesday's nightcap.

SAN ANTONIO ? Freshman Caitlyn Ivy had two home runs, including a grand slam, to lead UTSA to a come-from-behind, 10-3 victory over Houston Baptist in game two of a doubleheader on Tuesday at Roadrunner Field. Junior Rudi Cantu’s bases-loaded, walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh lifted the Roadrunners (18-17) to a 3-2 win over the Huskies (11-16) in the opener.

Ivy went 2-for-3 with five RBIs in the nightcap, part of a 10-run, 14-hit explosion by the UTSA bats. Freshman Ashley Kappler also had two hits and her second home run of the season, while senior Leanne Risberg collected two base knocks and a pair of RBIs. Junior Rudi Cantu had two hits, including her third double of the year, and juniors Krista Sitka and Chelsey Chapman also registered two hits each.

Meanwhile, freshman right-hander Morgan Luksa earned the win in her first decision of the season. The Clear Creek High product struck out four and allowed just three runs on six hits in a complete game. She tossed just 86 pitches, 65 for strikes, and retired 13 of the last 14 batters she faced.

The Roadrunners grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, as Kappler singled, moved to second on a walk to Risberg and scored on a two-out single to center by Sitka.

The Huskies took a 3-1 lead in the third with one swing of the bat. With the bases loaded, Casie Campanello lined a1-2 pitch down the right field line for a bases-clearing triple.

UTSA began to chip away in the third. Chapman led off with a single to center and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cantu. After a flyout, Risberg drilled a base hit to center to plate Chapman easily from second and make it 3-2. Ivy followed with her first of two long balls one frame later, lifting an 0-1 pitch over the left field fence to knot the score at 3-3.

The Roadrunners broke the game open in the fifth. A leadoff single by Cantu and a sac bunt by Kappler put the go-ahead run in scoring position with one down. Risberg came through with another base hit, a ground ball up the middle that plated Cantu easily from second. Sophomore Danye Holmes grounded a hard single off the outstretched glove of the second baseman and Sitka followed with a base hit to center to load the bases for Ivy, who sent the first pitch off the scoreboard netting in left field for the team’s third grand slam of the season.

For good measure, Kappler launched a two-run homer to left in the sixth that scored Cantu, who reached on a double, and made it 10-3.

Jammie Weidert led the Huskies at the plate by going 2-for-3, while Campanello had all three RBIs on her only hit of the game. Weidert took the loss in the circle to fall to 4-6, surrendering eight runs on 12 hits in five frames.

Game one was a tight contest throughout.

HBU took a 1-0 lead in the second on a solo home run to left by Kaitlin Southerland.

The Roadrunners responded with a pair of unearned runs in the third. Junior Kelly Cato led off with a double to right center and scored on an error off a sac bunt attempt by Chapman to tie the game. Cantu moved Chapman over with a sac bunt and Risberg came through with a clutch base hit to left to give UTSA a 2-1 lead.

The Huskies knotted the score at 2-2 in the fifth, as Melissa Wright doubled home Jaymie Heibel.

With extra innings looking like a sure thing, UTSA loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh. Freshman Kristin Wehmeyer led off with an infield single off the pitcher’s glove. Cato followed with a bunt single and Chapman reached when her sac bunt was fielded and the throw was late to third to force Wehmeyer. Cantu then followed with the game-winning single to left center that would have been extra bases had it not ended the game.

Sophomore Emily Humpal ran her record to 10-8 with the win, striking out six and allowing just two runs on six hits in her 12th complete game of the year. Risberg and Cato led the Roadrunners with two hits apiece.

Wright led the Huskies at the plate by going 3-for-3 with an RBI. Beth Evans (4-6) fanned eight and allowed one earned run on seven hits in the loss.

The Roadrunners will wrap up their 11-game home stand with a three-game Southland Conference series against Nicholls this weekend. First pitch in a Saturday doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m., followed by a single game at noon Sunday.
