Trio collects gold medals on Saturday at UTSA Relays

SAN ANTONIO ? UTSA sophomore Shavonne Armbrister won the 400 meters and freshmen Amber Byars and Lindsey Nguyen grabbed top honors in the discus and pole vault, respectively, to highlight final day action for the women’s track & field team at the UTSA Relays held Saturday at Blossom Stadium.

Armbrister led a 1-2-3-4 finish by the Roadrunners in the Olympic Development 400m, circling the oval in 59.04. Freshman Rebecca Crain was second in 1:00.43, while sophomore Kayla Thomas and freshman Celeste Smoote placed third (1:02.29) and fourth (1:02.54), respectively.

Byars launched the platter to a 130-8 measure in her first discus competition of the season to easily outdistance runner-up Janet Munoz of Texas Lutheran (112-4).

Nguyen, the school’s indoor record-holder in the pole vault, cleared 10-6 to finish second overall behind unattached competitor Britni Lawrence (13-1 ?/3.20m) and first among all collegiate participants. She also moved into second place on the school’s all-time performers list behind Stephanie Henslee (3.36m).

Sophomore Jayde James followed a solid third-place effort in the 800m on Friday night with a runner-up showing in the 1,500m on Saturday, clocking a 4:54.55 for the bronze. Freshman Kayla Pratt was fourth in 4:59.79.

Senior Shanelle Slaughter provided a solid encore for her long jump victory on Friday with a third-place time of 12.51 in the 100m. Sophomore Aimee Jonas, a La Vernia native, was second in the javelin with an 89-2 measure in tough wind and fourth in the 100m hurdles in 15.36, while sophomore Rebekah Hill took third in the triple jump with a 38-2 wind-aided mark. The 4x400m relay team of Armbrister, junior Jessica Jones and freshmen Celeste Smoote and Rebecca Crain concluded the two-day meet with a runner-up time of 3:57.31.

The Roadrunners return to action next Wednesday-Saturday, April 1-4, at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin.
