BEAUMONT ? UTSA's seven-match winning streak came to an end with a 4-3 loss at Lamar on Saturday.
The Roadrunners (11-5, 5-1 SLC) experienced trouble early on, as the Lady Cardinals (10-5, 5-1) grabbed the doubles point.
UTSA came close two winning two of the matches, but Lamar eventually won both in tiebreakers.
Mariaryeni Gutierrez and Maria Gutierrez defeated senior Karen Scida and freshman Micaela Silva, 9-7, at the No. 1 spot. Senior Monika Drabkova and sophomore Caroline Dedering fell, 8-4, against Manijee Ashrafi and Salina Aranda at the No. 2 spot and Lamar took the early lead. The duo of senior Nathalie Wallin and junior Holly Phillips stretched their doubles winning streak to seven by defeating Carla Nava and Manami Kuroda 9-8 (7-5).
That point proved to be the deciding factor, as the two teams split the six singles contests.
Scida fell to Mariaryeni Gutierrez 6-3, 6-1, at the top spot and the Lady Cardinals were victorious at the No. 2 position when Maria Gutierrez defeated Wallin, 6-1, 6-2, to end the Stockhom, Sweden, native's 14-match winning streak. Drabkova fell to Nava, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 3 spot and that clinched the match for Lamar. Phillips extended her singles winning streak to seven with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph against Ashrafi at the No. 4 slot. Meanwhile, Dedering defeated Kuroda, 7-6, 7-5, 6-3, at the No. 5 position and Silva claimed a victory at the No. 6 spot over Aranda, 1-6, 7-5, 6-2.
The Birds will look to get back on the winning track at 10 a.m. on Sunday at McNeese State.
