UTSA thumps Texas-Pan American, 17-10

Freshman Jason Mohn hit the first two home runs of his career and had seven RBIs on Tuesday.

SAN ANTONIO ? Freshman right fielder Jason Mohn hit the first two home runs of his career and posted the second-most RBIs in school history (seven) to lead UTSA to a 17-10 victory against Texas-Pan American on Tuesday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.

The Roadrunners (14-8), who won their fourth game in a row, used a 12-run second inning to put the game away early. The dozen runs were just one short of the program record, which was set in the second frame of a 24-12 victory at Texas State on April 2, 1995.

Mohn, who was making only his third start of the season, led a 12-hit, nine-walk barrage by going 3-for-4, including a two-run single in the pivotal second, a sacrifice fly to center two innings later and two-run shots in sixth and eighth frames. He fell two RBIs short of the program standard set by Trent Lockwood last year in a 27-4 victory against Prairie View A&M.

"I saw the ball really well out there today," Mohn said after the game. "Most importantly, though, I just wanted to come out and help us get another win. The two homers and seven RBIs were great, but I don't care what my numbers are as long as we are winning games."

Junior third baseman Lance Brown also had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and he scored three times and brought home two. Meanwhile, senior designated hitter Jose Hernandez, the reigning Southland Conference Hitter of the Week, added three RBIs on a bases-clearing double in the second.

Senior left-hander Andy Bendict (1-0) earned the win in relief, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings. Benedict allowed just one hit and fanned one in the 24-pitch outing.

After the Broncs (5-19) scored on a suicide squeeze in their half of the second, senior left fielder Aaron Powell began the 12-run explosion with a single up the middle. Freshman first baseman Matthew James then was walked and Brown hit what appeared to be an inning-ending double play to short. However, Andrew Perez could not field the grounder cleanly and the wheels then completely fell off for Texas-Pan American.

Mohn drove home his first two runs of the day with a base hit up the middle. A walk to sophomore second baseman Ryan Hutson loaded the bases and back-to-back free passes to sophomore catcher Tyler Carpenter and senior shortstop Marshal Davis pushed UTSA's lead to 4-1. Senior All-America center fielder Michael Rockett stroked a single to left to bring home the fifth run of the inning and that was followed by Hernandez' bases-clearing two-bagger, his team-leading 11th of the season. Powell recorded his second hit of the frame, which tied a school record, to right to bring home Hernandez and, after James walked for the second time in the inning, Brown launched a double to deep left center to bring home two more runs. Hutson then laced a double down the left-field line two batters later to complete the 12-run stanza.

UTPA starter David De Leon (0-5) was charged with the loss after surrendering nine runs (eight earned) on just four hits, but he walked four and threw only 17 of his 45 pitches for strikes.

The Roadrunners defeated the Broncs for the sixth game in a row and now have won 35 of the last 43 played between the two schools dating back to Feb. 20, 2000.

UTSA is back in action on Friday when it begins a three-game Southland Conference series against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (8-17, 1-8 SLC). First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Bird Bath.
