Hernandez named Southland Conference Hitter of the Week

Senior Jose Hernandez had two hits in all five games last week.

SAN ANTONIO ? Senior outfielder/designated hitter Jose Hernandez was named Southland Conference Hitter of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. It marks the second time in the last three weeks that the Anaheim Hills, Calif., native has earned the circuit's top honor.

Hernandez continued his red-hot start to his final season in navy blue and orange, recording two hits in every contest and reaching base three times in four of UTSA’s five games last week. He increased his season home run total to an conference-best eight with his solo shot in Saturday’s 10-6 win at Sam Houston State. Hernandez also was a key component in the Roadrunners’ weekend sweep at Sam Houston State, which was the program’s fourth in a row against the Bearkats (dating back to 2006).

He finished the week with a .556 batting average (10-for-18) with five runs scored, three doubles, a homer and four RBIs. Hernandez also walked five times, reached base at a .652 clip and posted a .889 slugging percentage (16 total bases).

He continues to lead UTSA in nearly every offensive category: batting average (.425), runs scored (24), doubles (10), home runs (8), RBIs (24), total bases (67), slugging percentage (.918/t-No. 7 NCAA), walks (16) and on-base percentage (.547).

The Roadrunners (13-8) step out of league play on Tuesday afternoon when they host Texas-Pan American (5-18) at Roadrunner Field. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
