SAN ANTONIO ? The UTSA men’s tennis team collected a win in their second of five consecutive home matches with a 4-3 triumph over Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday at the UTSA Tennis Center.
The Roadrunners improved their overall record to 6-9 including a 3-1 mark in Southland Conference play.
Both teams were coming off a loss in their last conference matchup, both losing to Texas-Pan American. UTSA fell to the Broncs, 4-2, on March 14 while the Lions (6-6, 0-2 SLC) dropped their match, 5-2, four days later.
“Both teams were coming in to try and rebound from a tough conference loss,” head coach Dr. Oliver Trittenwein said. after the match “They are a very well-coached team and I knew they would be ready for us. We practiced and prepared well last week and I think our work paid off.”
UTSA jumped out to the early lead by taking two of the three doubles matches to earn the point.
Junior Jorge Delgado and sophomore Daniel Moreiras quickly dispatched Jan Bezdecka and Alexis Biarneix, 8-1, at the No. 3 spot. The freshman-sophomore tandem of Pedro Zanotelli and Max Stratmann clinched the point at the No. 2 position by defeating Guillaume Capovin and Julien Roussel, 8-3.
In singles action, senior Andre Moreira continued his dominant play with a convincing win at No. 2, beating Damien Cordoba, 6-1, 6-1, which gave UTSA a 2-0 advantage. SLU finally got on the board when Capovin knocked out Moreiras at No. 4, 6-4, 6-1.
Zanotelli extended the Roadrunners’ lead with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 3 over Benjamin Enke. Stratmann took the first set 6-1, but he then dropped the last two sets by the same scores to Biarneix at No. 6. Junior Rodrigo Morgado clinched the match for UTSA at No. 1 when he defeated Stepan Siska, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
“A lot of the teams in our conference have a little different look to them this year, so weren’t exactly sure what to look for in our matches this season,” Trittenwein said. “To be sitting here with a 3-1 record is nice and the credit goes to these guys who put in the hard work to prepare all season long.”
UTSA returns to the court when it hosts DePaul in a home non-conference matchup at 2 p.m. on Thursday. Admission to all home tennis matches is free.
