SAN ANTONIO ? The UTSA men’s tennis team made easy work of Western Illinois on Wednesday afternoon, beating the Leathernecks, 7-0, in a non-conference contest at the UTSA Tennis Center.
The Roadrunners improved to 5-9 on the season, while the Leathernecks fell to 1-10.
UTSA jumped on top early by sweeping the doubles competition. Junior Jorge Delgado and sophomore Daniel Moreiras teamed up at No. 3, beating Michael Schild and Rodrigo Azevedo, 8-1. At No. 2, sophomore Max Stratmann and freshman Pedro Zanotelli sealed the early point for the Runners by defeating Sean Ragee-Nelson and Neil Lesinski, 8-5.
Rounding out doubles play with an 8-5 win, senior Andre Moreira and junior Rodrigo Morgado dispatched James McGuire and Zach Frisch.
Moreira gave UTSA the 2-0 advantage early in singles competition, knocking out Francisco Ortiz, 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot. Zanotelli followed suit with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Lesinski at No. 3.
Delgado sealed the match for the Roadrunners at No. 5, beating Mandela Shepard, 6-1, 6-2. Moreiras finished his No. 4 match shortly after, defeating Ragee-Nelson, 6-3, 6-1. Morgado battled through a tough second set, outlasting Frisch at No. 1, 6-3, 7-5. Rounding out the sweep for the Runners, Stratmann dismissed Jim Capalbo at No. 6, 6-3, 6-0.
“We came out and did what we needed to do today,” head coach Dr. Oliver Trittenwein said. “We were a little disappointed with our last loss and wanted to come out focused today and take care of business.”
The Roadrunners will be back in action this Saturday, March 21, when they host a conference match with Southeastern Louisiana at noon at the UTSA Tennis Center. Admission to all UTSA home tennis matches is free.
