SAN ANTONIO ? UTSA won its sixth match in a row and improved to a perfect 5-0 in Southland Conference play with a 6-1 win against Texas A&M- Corpus Christi on Saturday.
UTSA (10-4) claimed the doubles point in a well-fought battle.
Senior Nathalie Wallin and junior Holly Phillips advanced their winning streak to five with a win over Nina Ciric and Fabiana Mersan, 8-6. A triumph from the senior-sophomore duo of Monika Drabkova and Caroline Dedering against Alexandra Dyckman and Erika Iriarte (8-6) got the pair back on the winning track and clinched the doubles point.
The Roadrunners then made it look easy in singles play, posting five straight-set victories.
Phillips finished first at the No. 3 spot with a victory over Filmalter in consecutive 6-0 sets. Wallin then defeated Ciric at the No. 2 position, 6-3, 6-3, and pushed her winning streak to 13 matches. When Cicak fell to the hands of Scida, 7-6, 6-3, the victory was clinched for the Roadrunners. The winning ways continued, as Dedering defeated Souille in back-to-back 6-3 sets. Iriarte then was forced to retire with leg cramps and Drabkova claimed victory, 7-6(7).
UTSA continues its home stand when it hosts Western Illinois at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18.
