EDINBURG ? The UTSA men’s tennis team fell at Texas-Pan American, 4-2, on Saturday at McAllen Country Club and saw its season record drop to 4-9 overall and 2-1 in Southland Conference play.
Due to rainy conditions, the match started with singles competition and doubles were to be played at the end of the match, if necessary.
Freshman Pedro Zanotelli was the first Roadrunner off the court and dropped his No. 3 contest to Andrew Irving, 6-0, 6-1. Senior Andre Moreira tthen ied things up at No. 2, dispatching Nirvick Mohinta 6-3, 6-0.
The Broncs (2-9, 2-0 SLC) recaptured the lead at No. 4 when Brett Bernstein defeated junior Jorge Delgado, 7-6, 6-3. The Roadrunners tied things right back up when junior Rodrigo Morgado took down Aswin Vijayaragavan at No. 1, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Shortly thereafter, sophomore Max Stratmann lost his No. 5 duel with Beau Bernstein, 3-6, 6-3, 1-6, which gave UTPA a 3-2 lead.
To determine whether the doubles competition would be necessary, it came down to the No. 6 battle between freshman Shariq Khan and Marcus Dornauf. Dornauf outlasted Khan in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, which clinched the match for Pan Am.
“We did not play anywhere near the level we played against UTA or TCU,” head coach Dr. Oliver Trittenwein said. “I have to give UTPA credit because they came out and played hard today. We haven’t lost to them in about 10 years and they just wanted it more than we did today.”
UTSA kicks off a five-match home stand when they host Western Illinois at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18, at the UTSA Tennis Center. Admission to all Roadrunners home matches is free.
