Senior Leanne Risberg hit two home runs with five RBIs in Sunday's doubleheader split.

SAN ANTONIO ? Senior Leanne Risberg launched two home runs and drove in a career-high five runs and head coach Lori Cook picked up win No. 100 as UTSA defeated UT Arlington, 8-5, in game two of a Southland Conference doubleheader on Sunday. The Mavericks rallied for a 5-3 win in nine innings in the opener at Roadrunner Field.

With the split, the Roadrunners moved to 11-12 overall and 6-5 in league play, while UTA fell to 8-15 and 4-7.

Risberg went 3-for-7 in the twinbill, including a 2-for-4, 5-RBI effort in the nightcap, and moved into sole possession of ninth place on UTSA’s career home runs chart with 28. Sophomore Kristin Kappler and freshman Amber Anderson tallied four hits apiece for the Roadrunners, who pounded out 11 runs on 18 hits in the doubleheader.

Cook, in her fourth season at the helm, improved her career record with UTSA to 100-82, which includes a 66-32 (.673) league ledger.

Heather Fortenberry’s solo shot over the center field fence on the first pitch of game two gave UTA a quick 1-0 lead.

UTSA went to work in the bottom of the frame, as junior Rudi Cantu led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Ashley Kappler and advanced to third on a base hit by Anderson. Risberg then answered Fortenberry’s blast by going deep to right center to put the Roadrunners on top by two.

The Roadrunners added two more runs on RBI-doubles by the Kappler sisters in the bottom of the third inning to increase their lead to 5-1.

UTA plated four runs over the next two frames to tie it a 5-all. Whitney Simpson’s three-run bomb to left in the fifth highlighted the Mavericks’ rally.

Risberg responded again for UTSA, as she followed a leadoff double by Anderson with her third long ball of the season to put the Runners on top, 7-5, in the bottom of the fifth. Another insurance run came home later in the inning on an RBI-single by junior Kelly Cato.

Sophomore Emily Humpal went the distance for the Runners for her fifth win of the season. The Corpus Christi native struck out a season-high 10 batters, while allowing five runs off seven hits and three walks. Fortenberry (4-5) was tagged with the loss after giving up six earned runs on eight hits in four innings of work.

In game one, UTA took an early 1-0 lead, as Rebecca Collom plated Heather Fortenberry, who reached on a double, in the top of the first.

After three scoreless frames, the Mavericks added their second run of the game when Cara Hulme led off the fifth with a solo shot to left to put UTA up, 2-0.

However, Kristin Kappler belted her third bomb of the season to cut the Roadrunners’ deficit in half in the bottom of the stanza.

UTSA took its first lead of the game in the sixth, as Anderson launched a two-run homer over the right center field wall to hand the Runners a 3-2 lead.

Hulme forced extra frames with a one-out home run to center field ? her second of the game - in the top of the seventh.

The Roadrunners had chances in the seventh and eighth innings, but the Fortenberry worked out of bases-loaded jams in relief of Hulme.

In the top of the ninth, Samantha Chumchal went yard with a runner on to give UTA a 5-3 advantage. Fortenberry closed the book on the Runners with a 1-2-3 ninth, earning the win with scoreless 2.2 innings.

The rubber game is slated for 1 p.m. at Roadrunner Field.
