COLLEGE STATION ? Junior Teddy Williams put a wrap on the best indoor season of his illustrious three-year career on Saturday with an eighth-place finish in the 60-meter dash at the NCAA Championships.
Williams, who entered the final with the third-best preliminary time (Southland Conference-record 6.59), got off to a good start out of the blocks but was unable to recover after spiking himself early in the race and he crossed the tape in 6.70. Clemson's Jacoby Ford won the National Championship with his 6.52 clocking, while LSU's Trindon Holliday (6.55) and Florida's Terrell Wilks (6.61) collected silver and bronze medals, respectively, in front of 4.917 fans at Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium.
The Tyler native earned indoor All-America honors for the first time and, coupled with his outdoor certificate from last spring, he became the fourth two-time All-American in program history. Leonard Byrd (400m) and Justin Youngblood (multi-events) both collected three awards during their careers, while Larry Brooks (800m) was a two-time honoree during the 2007 campaign.
"The first three steps were great, but for the first time in my career, I spiked myself," Williams said after the race. "That completely threw my balance off and almost knocked me out of my lane. It was a disappointing end to the season, but when you look at the positives, I was one of only eight guys to make it this far and I set a Southland Conference record in the prelims. I had a chance to do something great today, but mistakes happen, and I just have bounce back during the outdoor season."
Williams one point allowed UTSA to finish in a tie for 59th in the team standings.
The Roadrunners kick off the outdoor season next weekend.
