Hernandez named Southland Conference Hitter of the Week

Senior Jose Hernandez was named SLC Hitter of the Week on Tuesday.

FRISCO ? Senior left fielder Jose Hernandez, who tied a UTSA single-game record with three home runs last Friday night, was tabbed the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.

Hernandez was a one-man wrecking crew in leading the Roadrunners to a 3-1 record last week. He hit .600 (9-for-15) with seven runs scored, two doubles, a triple, four homers and 11 RBIs. The Anaheim Hills, Calif., native had at least two hits in all four contests, 25 total bases (1.167 slugging percentage) and reached base at a .632 clip.

His top game was a three-homer, six-RBI performance in Friday’s 11-10 win against Southeastern Louisiana in the conference opener for both teams. Not only did he tie the program’s single-game record with his three long balls, but his walk-off two-run shot with two down in the ninth completed a five-run rally.

Hernandez leads UTSA in batting average (.452), runs (18), doubles (7), home runs (7/t-No. 2 NCAA), total bases (49/t-No. 4 NCAA), RBI (20), slugging percentage (1.167/No. 2 NCAA), walks (7), hit by pitch (4) and on-base percentage (.556) this season.

The Birds (8-4) wrap up their current four-game home stand on Tuesday night with a 6 p.m. contest against Illinois State (4-4).
