SAN ANTONIO ? Junior Krista Sitka went 4-for-4 with five RBIs and UTSA collected the program’s 500th victory with a 7-1 win against Sam Houston State in the second half of a Southland Conference doubleheader on Saturday. The Bearcats used a three-run seventh inning to rally for a 6-4 decision in the opener at Roadrunner Field.
With the split, the Roadrunners improved to 9-8 overall and 4-1 in league, while Sam Houston moved to 9-9 and 3-2.
Sitka was a triple shy of the cycle in the nightcap to lead an 11-hit explosion by the Roadrunners. The first baseman had a three-run home run, a double and a pair of singles and was a combined 6-for-7 with six RBIs on the day.
Freshman Amber Anderson was 2-for-4 with a two-run double, while freshman Ashley Kappler also had a pair of base hits.
Sophomore Emily Humpal worked a complete game to move her record to 2-0 in conference and 4-4 overall. The Corpus Christi native allowed one run on five hits in her second straight victory in the circle.
After a pair of scoreless frames, Sam Houston struck first on an RBI-triple by Alex Survant that was grounded just inside the first base bag to plate Hailey Wiginton, who reached on a single.
UTSA responded in the bottom of the frame on Sitka’s first home run of the season, a line drive shot just inside the foul pole down the left field line that scored Anderson and senior Leanne Risberg, who both singled with two outs.
The Roadrunners extended their lead to 7-1 with four runs in the sixth. Junior Cassie Miller got things started with a single through the left side of the infield and base hits by junior Rudi Cantu and Kappler loaded the bases with one down. Anderson then drilled a Brandi Crnkovic offering into the gap in right center to push across two runs. After a popup, Sitka provided the final margin with ground ball single up the middle.
Tomi Garrison allowed three runs on five hits in four innings of work in the loss to fall to 2-2. Survant led the Bearkats at the plate with a pair of hits and the lone RBI.
Sam Houston rallied for a 6-4 win in a seesaw battle in game one.
The Bearkats got the first punch in with three runs in the fourth. Back-to-back walks to Calli Wood and Sarah Parich opened the frame and a sacrifice bunt from Mandy Gegen put runners at second and third with one out. Amy Brown singled up the middle to drive in both runners and Casie Everritt forced the third run home with a fielder’s choice groundout.
UTSA grabbed the lead with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Risberg singled to lead off and a single by sophomore Kristin Kappler and a walk to freshman Kristin Wehmeyer loaded the bases with nobody out. Sitka brought the first run home on a base hit up the middle, while junior Kelly Cato drew a walk to push another run across. Anderson then drilled a double to left center to give the Roadrunners a 4-3 lead.
Sam Houston began its rally with a single from Survant and a walk to Kendra Spivey. Wood advanced both runners with a sac bunt and Parich lifted a sac fly to left to knot the score at 4-4. Gegen reached on a walk and Brown provided the game-winning single to right to push two runs home.
Sitka led the Roadrunners’ offense with two hits, while sophomore Dany? Holmes (4-3) allowed five earned runs on seven hits in the loss. The left-hander ran her scoreless innings streak to 23 innings and punched out five Bearkats.
Crnkovic gave up four runs on seven hits in running her record to 4-4. Brown led the Bearkats with two hits and four RBIs.
The rubber game is slated for noon Sunday.
