SAN ANTONIO ? UTSA women’s tennis continued its perfect start to the Southland Conference season on Sunday with a 5-2 victory against Northwestern State University.
The Roadrunners won their fifth match in a row to improve to 9-4 overall and 4-0 in conference play. The Lady Demons, meanwhile, saw their 2009 ledger drop to 7-4 overall (2-2 SLC).
UTSA was able to get the upper hand early with wins at the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles spot. The senior-junior tandem of Nathalie Wallin and Holly Phillips claimed another victory with an 8-2 win against Adna Curukovic and Suncica Strkic. Senior Karen Scida and freshman Micaela Silva followed with an 8-3 triumph against Olga Bazhanova and Dragana Colic to clinch the point.
The match then was decided with three quick singles victories by the Roadrunners at the top three spots in the lineup.
Wallin defeated Kathrin Lange in consecutive 6-1 sets for her 12th consecutive win. Phillips followed with 6-3, 6-2 win over Bianca Schulz for her ninth straight triumph and UTSA sealed the deal when Curukovic fell at the hands of Scida (6-2, 6-4).
“I am happy about our level of play right now,” head coach Erin Boisclair said after the match. “These girls have a hungry attitude, a strong will to win and a drive that will get them there. They all know that hard work pays off and they showed that this weekend.”
The Roadrunners will take a break from conference action on Thursday, March 12, when they host No. 54 Yale in a noon match at the UTSA Tennis Complex.
