HAMMOND, La. ? The UTSA women’s tennis team beat Southeastern Louisiana, 7-0, on Sunday and handed the Lady Lions their first Southland Conference regular season loss since March 6, 2005 (vs. Lamar). The whitewashing ended a 40-match league winning streak and it also was Southeastern's first home loss since losing to the Lady Cardinals a little less than four years ago.
The Roadrunners (7-4, 2-0 SLC) finished the Southland Conference-opening weekend a perfect 15-0 record (3-0 doubles/12-0 singles).
Senior Karen Scida and freshman Micaela Silva teamed up at No. 1 doubles and defeated Audrey Chelini and Iva Velkovska, 8-4, to open the match. Senior Monika Drabkova and sophomore Caroline Dedering then made quick work of Morgane Dadot and Nadine Steward, 8-2, to clinch the point for UTSA. Meanwhile, senior Nathalie Wallin and junior Holly Phillips beat Annika Hanke and Ashley Longoria, 8-2.
The Roadrunners came out firing early in singles action.
Phillips dropped only two games on her way to an easy 6-0, 6-2 win over Dadot at the No. 4 spot. Drabkova followed with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 3 over Steward. Dedering clinched the victory with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph at the No. 6 slot. Wallin increased her winning streak to 10 when she beat Chelini at No. 2.
The Lady Lions fell to 3-3 overall.
UTSA returns to the court next weekend for two more conference matchups when it host sCentral Arkansas at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, and Northwestern State at 10 a.m. the following day.
