Junior Cassie Miller's three-run homer helped UTSA pick up its first win of the season on Saturday. |
COLLEGE STATION ? Junior Cassie Miller hit a three-run home run to help UTSA rally for a 4-3 victory against Tulsa on day two of the Aggie Classic held at the Aggie Softball Complex. No. 5 Texas A&M scored four unearned runs in an 8-0 run-ruling over the Roadrunners (1-3) in the tournament finale.
In the first game, Miller’s three-run blast to left field in the bottom of the sixth proved to be the game winner, as the Roadrunners broke into the win column for the first time this season.
Jessica Stoelke put Tulsa on the board first with a seeing-eye single through the right side of the UTSA infield that plated Jackie Lawrence in the top of the second inning.
Freshman Amber Anderson, who went a combined 6-for-8 in the two games on Friday, tied the score at one with a double to center field that scored junior Rudi Cantu, who reached on a leadoff walk.
The Golden Hurricane ? which defeated A&M, 3-2, in the middle game Saturday ? scratched for a run in the fifth and sixth innings. Kelly Chapman led off the fifth with a triple to center and Stephanie Chomicki drove her in with a single through the left side of the infield to put Tulsa up, 2-1. Kailey Yarmer then launched a solo shot to left center to give the Golden Hurricane a two-run advantage through five and a half frames.
Senior Leanne Risberg drew a leadoff walk to start the three-run sixth for UTSA. She moved to second on a one-out single to center field by sophomore transfer Emily Humpal. Miller then blasted her fourth career long ball to help lift the Roadrunners to the come-from-behind victory, their eighth in 10 tries against Tulsa.
Humpal came on in relief of Anderson and induced a fly ball to right and a pair of popups on the infield to earn the save. Anderson (1-0) scattered six hits and did not allow a walk in six innings of work. Jordan Kinard (0-2) fanned seven but allowed four earned runs on five hits in the loss.
Texas A&M broke open a close game with six runs, four unearned, in the bottom of the fifth inning in the final game of the two-day Classic.
Taryn Broussard hit a solo homer in the bottom of the second to give the Aggies an early 1-0 lead. Rhiannon Kliesing slugged one of her own one frame later to make it 2-0 A&M after three.
Natalie Villarreal began the fifth with a two-run home run that scored Kelsey Spittler, who led off with a walk. Alex Reynolds kept the inning alive with a two-out walk and Erin Glasco then reached on an infield error. Singles by Macie Morrow, Broussard and Spittler put the eight-run rule into effect.
Kliesing struck out five and scattered six hits in the win for A&M. Humpal (0-2) allowed just one run in one and two-thirds innings of work in the loss.
Anderson, Cantu, Miller, sophomores Dany? Holmes and Kristin Kappler and freshman Ashley Kappler all singled for the Roadrunners off Kliesing.
The Roadrunners will face Prairie View A&M at 12:15 p.m. on Sunday at the Aggie Softball Complex.
