SAN ANTONIO ? Senior Monica Gibbs’ game-winning layup with seven seconds remaining gave UTSA a thrilling 58-57 win against Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.

The Roadrunners extended their winning streak to five games (12 of 13 overall) to improve to 14-7 overall and 7-1 in SLC play. Meanwhile, the Lady Lions saw their record fall to 13-9 and 5-4 in league play.

Senior forward Ryba Pawlaczyk and sophomore guard Jordan Stark led UTSA with 13 points apiece, while senior forward Onika Anderson and sophomore guard Amber Gregg added a dozen. Pawlaczyk hauled in a team-high eight rebounds and Anderson grabbed seven.

Chelsea Hix paced Southeastern Louisiana with 13 points, while Charinee Mitchell chipped in with 12.

The Lady Lions went on a 7-0 run to regain lead at 37-34 with 15:50 to go in the second half. UTSA countered with a 10-0 run of its own to retake the lead at 44-37 with 12:15 left. Hix connected on a 3-pointer from the right wing to cap off a 10-3 run, which tied the score at 47 with just under four minutes showing on the clock. Gregg’s three ball from the left corner gave the Roadrunners a three-point edge at 54-51, but Mitchell responded with a 3-pointer of her own to tie it with 1:26 remaining. Gibbs’ two free throws put the Roadrunners up by two, but Mitchell knocked down another 3-pointer to give the Lady Lions a one-point lead with 22 seconds left. With the clock winding down, Gibbs drove to the basket to put UTSA up one with seven ticks left for just her second field goal of the game and first since the 14:24 mark in the half. Mitchell’s 3-pointer was off the mark as time expired, giving the Roadrunners the thrilling victory.

After the Lady Lions scored first, Anderson netted four of the next eight UTSA points to give the Birds their first lead. Southeastern got within two at 16-14 when Kelli Jenkins connected on a jumper at the nine-minute mark. The Roadrunners increased their lead to 11 following an 11-2 stretch, but the Lady Lions closed the gap to one, with half-ending 10-0 run.

UTSA travels to Conway, Ark., for a 7 p.m. contest at Central Arkansas on Wednesday, Feb. 10.
