SAN ANTONIO ? Junior Omar Johnson led six Roadrunners in double figures with 18 points, but Corey Allmond and Barkley Falkner scored 22 apiece to lead Sam Houston State to a come-from-behind, 89-86 double-overtime victory over UTSA on Wednesday night at the Convocation Center.

Tied at 85-85 with just under two minutes left in the second overtime, Lance Pevehouse made a pair of free throws to put Sam Houston on top. Johnson made 1-of-2 freebies with 41 seconds left after being fouled in the right corner on a rebound.

With the shot clock winding down, Drae Murray had a chance to put the Bearkats up by four, but his 3-pointer was off the mark. However, DeLuis Ramirez came up with a huge offensive rebound and Allmond was fouled while playing keep-away. He made both free throws and UTSA’s last-second three was off the mark, as Sam Houston held on for the three-point victory, its eighth straight in the series.

It marked the second double-overtime game of the season for the Roadrunners, who fell to 13-7 overall and 4-3 in Southland Conference play. UTSA also lost in two extra periods to UT Arlington, 100-97, on Jan. 17. The last time UTSA played two double-overtime games in the same season was in 1999 in back-to-back losses to Nicholls (104-99) and Sam Houston State (92-90).

Pevehouse and Ashton Mitchell added 14 and 13 points, respectively, for the Bearkats (12-8), who remained in first place in the West Division at 6-1. Falkner pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds, including six on the offensive glass, while Ramirez grabbed nine boards, seven offensive to help Sam Houston tally 26 second-chance points, including 22 after halftime.

Juniors Chris Allen and Morris Smith IV poured in 15 points apiece for the Roadrunners, while senior Travis Gabbidon and juniors Josh Bonney and Demarco Stepter posted 10 each. Stepter (9) and Bonney (8) combined for 17 of UTSA’s 46 rebounds, while Johnson dished out a season-high eight assists.

Trailing 69-64 with under a minute left in regulation, Bonney converted a three-point play to pull UTSA to within two. Gabbidon then came up with a steal and Johnson drove into the lane for a running jumper that tied it at 69-69 with 8.7 seconds on the clock. The Philadelphia native then drew an offensive foul on Mitchell, his fifth of the game, to give the ball back to the Roadrunners with three ticks remaining. Johnson’s mid-court shot was off the mark, sending the game to extra time.

In the first overtime, Allen gave the Roadrunners a 75-72 lead with his second three of the evening at the 2:39 mark. Pevehouse and Bonney traded baskets before Falkner connected on just his seventh trey of the year to knot the score at 77-all with 1:29 left. Gabbidon quickly put UTSA back on top with a layup, but Sam Houston would not quit.

Allmond misfired from the left elbow, but the ball ended up going out of bounds. The officials could not determine who touched it last, so UTSA was awarded the ball via the possession arrow. The Roadrunners turned it over on the inbounds play, but Pevehouse missed a short-range jumper with under 10 ticks left. There was another jump-ball with Allen and Allmond battling for the loose ball, leaving 0.5 seconds on the clock for Sam Houston to inbound underneath its own basket. Murray found Falkner all alone for a easy layup to tie it as time expired.

The Bearkats trailed most of the game, but used eight second-half 3-pointers to climb back into the game. Allmond drained a fade-away three from in front of his own bench with 4:42 to play to knot the score at 59-all. Junior Josh Bonney made a pair of free throws, but Preston Brown connected from downtown to give Sam Houston its first lead since the 18:08 mark of the first half and set up the exciting ending.

The Roadrunners jumped out to a 16-6 lead through the first 8:32, but the Bearkats made it 16-11 on an Allmond three and a Barkley Falkner layup over the next two minutes.

Smith IV broke a three-minute scoring drought by both teams with a layup at the 6:35 mark, but Mitchell drained a trey to pull Sam Houston to within 20-16 with just under four to play in the half. A Drae Murray long ball made it 24-22, but UTSA ended the half on an 11-2 run in taking a 35-24 lead into the locker room.

The Roadrunners travel to Hammond, La., to face Southeastern Louisiana at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
