ROCKPORT ? The UTSA women’s golf team won the program’s first-ever team title after shooting a final-round 302 on Tuesday at the Stripes Islanders Classic. The Roadrunners finished the three-round, two-day tournament, which was played at the Rockport Country Club, with a team total of 920, which was 11 strokes better than runner-up Lamar.
"I am excited to get our first win," first-year head coach Carrie Cole said. "I am especially pleased for our two seniors, Laura (Baker) and Allie (Jordan), to reap the reward since they have been part of the program since the beginning. Shelly brought home our second individual title of the year, which wasa great performance. I am especially proud of the team forshowing they can perform like champions. This is a huge steppingstone for the rest of the season and I believe there is a lot more tocome."
UTSA, which was led by junior Shelly Martinez' first-place performance in the individual standings, rallied from one stroke down on the final day and the Roadrunners were able to lower their team scores in the second and third rounds after shooting a 311 to open play on Monday.
Martinez won her first career individual medal with a three-day scorecard of 223 (76-73-74). The Pecos native, who fired a two-over-par 74 in the final round, edged Drake’s Olivia Lansing by one stroke.
Senior Allie Jordan and freshman Shannon Jungman finished tied for 14th place with a three-round total of 234, while junior Madison McClain registered scores of 77, 79 and 80 (236) to finish tied for 22nd.
UTSA returns to action in two weeks (March 9-10) at the Claud Jacobs Intercollegiate in Victoria, Texas.
