FRISCO ? UTSA junior shortstop Kelly Cato was named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week by vote of the league’s sports information directors, the league office announced Tuesday.
Cato batted .833 (5-for-6) with two home runs, three runs and six RBIs to help lead UTSA to a doubleheader split against North Texas last Tuesday in the only action of the week for the Roadrunners.
In the opener, the Brazoswood High product went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI in an 8-3 loss to the Mean Green. Cato was a perfect 3-for-3 with a home run and four RBI in the 8-0 run-rule decision in the nightcap.
She leads the team with a .500 batting average, three home runs and eight RBI on the season.
It marks the second Hitter of the Week honor for UTSA in three weeks, as freshman Amber Anderson picked up the award on Feb. 10.
Chandler Hall of Texas State earned the SLC Pitcher of the Week award. She finished the week 1-1 after making three appearances on the mound in three starts. She helped lead Texas State to a 3-2 win over No. 19 Texas A&M at home. At the LSU Purple and Gold Challenge, Hall went 1-1 helping the Bobcats to a runner-up finish and a 2-2 record at the tournament after posting a 3-0 win over Northern Iowa. Hall finished with a 2.12 weekly ERA, holding teams to a .231 batting average.

Pitcher honorable mentions are Monika Covington, SFA; Holli Hill, UCA; Danye’ Holmes, UTSA; Stacie Tassin, AMCC. To receive an honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland softball sports information directors.
Each school’s SID nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for their own player.
