ROCKPORT ? Junior Shelly Martinez is in a three-way tie for first and the UTSA women’s golf team is in second place after day one of the Stripes Islanders Classic at the Rockport Country Club (par 74/6,023 yards).
Martinez fired rounds of 76 and 73 (149) to help the Roadrunners card a team total of 618 (311-307), a 36-hole total that trails first-day leader Lamar by just one shot in the team standings. The Pecos native is in a three-way tie for first with Therese Nilsson of Lamarand Maggie Welch of McNeese State in the individual standings.
"We had a great result today that has put us in contention again," first-year head coach Carrie Cole said. "The girls' attitudes were class all day. The great thing is that as a team we played well, but I believe we still have our best golf ahead of us."
Junior Madison McClain is tied for 17th after registering rounds of 77 and 79 (156) and a trio of Roadrunners ? seniors Laura Baker and Allie Jordan and freshman Shannon Jungman ? are tied for 30th with two-round totals of 159. Freshman Bruna Spengler, who is playing as an individual, fired a 80-77=157 and is tied for 19th place.
The final 18 holes get underway Tuesday with an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start.
