Senior Aaron Powell extended his hitting streak to 14 games with his pair of three-hit performances on Saturday.

SAN ANTONIO ? Senior Aaron Powell went a combined 6-for-10 with two home runs and five RBIs and junior right-hander Red Patterson struck out eight over 6.2 strong innings in his UTSA debut in helping lead the Roadrunners to a doubleheader split with San Francisco on Saturday at Wolff Stadium.

The Roadrunners (2-1) pounded out 17 hits, including eight for extra bases, and Patterson held the Dons at bay, giving up just three runs (two earned) on five hits, in a 12-3 victory in the nightcap.

USF (1-2) held on for a 13-9 triumph in the first game.

Aided by a stiff 25 mile-per-hour wind blowing out to right field the majority of the day, the two teams combined for 50 hits, including 12 doubles, four triples and four home runs.

Powell was the star of the day, going 3-for-5 in both tilts to extend his hitting streak to 14 games dating back to May 3, 2008. The preseason second-team All-Southland Conference selection had a double, his first two homers of the year and five RBIs in the game two win after rapping out three singles and scoring twice in the lid-lifter.

Meanwhile, sophomore Tyler Carpenter added five hits on the day, including a quartet of two-baggers.

The Roadrunners jumped out a 8-1 lead in game two after crossing the plate twice in each of the first two frames, followed by a three-spot in the third and one more an inning later. UTSA went on to tack on three more in the sixth to push the advantage to 11-1. The Dons pushed across a pair in the seventh to chase Patterson from the game, but the Birds responded with a run of their own to close out the nine-run victory.

San Francisco starter Garrett Luippold (0-1) was saddled with the loss after giving up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits.

USF took advantage of the elements in the opener, scoring four runs in the second and two more a stanza later to take a 6-1 lead. The Dons, who had five extra-base hits in the win, scored again in the fifth and three more times in the sixth to push the edge to nine and it appeared as though they had put the contest on ice.

However, UTSA plated three runs in its half of the sixth and two more following the seventh-inning stretch to pull within four at 10-6. A Derek Poppert two-run, two-out triple off the glove of Powell and a run-scoring double by Drew Johnson one batter later gave San Francisco three critical insurance runs one frame later. The Roadrunners made things interesting in the ninth with a three-spot, but Bob Mott left the tying run in the on-deck circle when he coaxed a flyout to center off the bat of junior designated hitter Ryan Rummel to end the game.

Doug Murray picked up the win in his Dons debut, allowing four runs on seven hits, while walking just one and fanning four.

Meanwhile, junior southpaw Kris Ruepke (0-1) was tagged with the loss after surrendering 10 runs on nine hits and a pair of walks.

Johnson led the offensive onslaught by going 3-for-5 with his run-scoring double and two runs scored.

Senior Jose Hernandez was 2-for-5 with a double, a home run and three RBIs, while sophomore Ryan Hutson was 2-for-3 with a two-bagger, a pair of walks and three runs scored in the setback.

The series concludes at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
