AUSTIN ? The UTSA men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 2-ranked Texas on Friday.

It was a new lineup for the Roadrunners in doubles play, as the No. 3 pair of sophomore Daniel Moreiras and junior Jorge Delgado fell behind quickly to Josh Zavala and Jonah Kane-West in an 8-2 loss. At No. 1, junior Rodrigo Morgado teamed up with senior Andre Moreira, losing to Ed Corrie and Kellen Damico, 8-6. Rounding out the doubles competition at No. 2, sophomore Max Stratmann and freshman Pedro Zanotelli fell to Miguel Reyes Varela and Josh Zavala, 8-5.

"The combo of Andre Moreira and Rodrigo Morgado did well for us last year," head coach Dr. Oliver Trittenwein said. "I wasn't liking some of the combinations we had out there recently, so I wanted to change it up just a little. We threw around some ideas, and this is what we came up with.

"I liked what I saw out there today. I didn't get to see much of the No. 3 match, but if Nos. 1 and 2 continue to play like they did today, I think we will be alright."

Zanotelli did not compete in singles competition, giving freshman Shariq Khan a chance to play at the No. 6 spot. In his first action since Feb 1, Khan fell to Kane-West, 6-3, 6-1. At No. 4, Stratmann lost to Reyes Varela, 6-2, 6-1, giving UT a 3-0 lead over the Roadrunners.

Sealing the match for the Longhorns, Dimitar Kutrovsky defeated Morgado at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-1.

Moreiras put up a fight at No. 3, but eventually lost to Damico, 6-3, 6-4. Delgado dropped his No. 5 match to Wiegand, 6-1, 6-2. Finishing play for the day, Moreira fell to Corrie at No. 2, 6-1, 6-0.

"Texas is just a great team,” Trittenwein said. “The goal for today was for the guys to be working on something in their game. We came out and competed hard today.

"The score doesn't always reflect what really happened in the match. Andre Moreira lost, 6-1, 6-0, but he was the last guy on the court. Almost every one of his games went to deuce. I really liked what I saw out here today. We competed hard against an incredibly-talented team."

The Runners will be back home to open Southland Conference play against Nicholls at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 22. Admission is free to all home matches at the UTSA Tennis Center.
