Senior Monica Gibbs tied the NCAA's single-season record with her third triple-double of the season on Wednesday night. |
CORPUS CHRISTI ? Senior guard Monica Gibbs recorded her second triple-double in the last three games and third of the year overall to tie the NCAA's single-season record with 19 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists to lead UTSA to a 72-54 victory at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday night.
Gibbs, who previously accomplished the feat on Dec. 6 against Huston-Tillotson (19 points, 13 assists, 12 rebounds) and again a week ago at Central Arkansas (18 points, 15 assists, 13 rebounds), tied the 23-year old national single-season record held by Tennessee Tech's Cheryl Taylor (1985-86).
Senior forward Ryba Pawlaczyk led the Roadrunners (16-8, 9-2 SLC) with a career-high 27 point on a 12-for-24 shooting performance from the floor and she also hauled in a team-high dozen boards en route to collecting her seventh double-double of the season. Meanwhile, junior guard Alysse Davis, a Corpus Christi native, netted 11 points in her first career start.
The Roadrunners moved into a first-place tie with UT Arlington, who was handed a 82-74 setback by Southeastern Louisiana in Arlington.
The Islanders (10-14, 5-6) were led by Shaye Montgomery’s 16 points, while Jade Davis chipped in with 13.
Gibbs’ three-point play gave UTSA a 39-30 edge within the first four minutes of the second half. A steal by Gibbs led to a fast-break layup to push the Roadrunners lead to 11 with 14:06 to play. A free throw by A&M-Corpus Christi's Davis cut the deficit to nine at the 10-minute mark, but it would be the closest it would get the rest of the night. UTSA then grabbed its largest lead of the game at 61-44 after an 11-3 run with under five minutes remaining.
The Roadrunners led 32-28 at the half.
UTSA returns home on Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest against Sam Houston State.
