SAN ANTONIO ? Junior Kelly Cato went a combined 5-for-6 with two home runs and five runs batted in to help lead UTSA to a doubleheader split against North Texas on Tuesday afternoon at Roadrunner Field. Cato went 3-for-3 with a homer and four RBIs in an 8-0 run-ruling in game two, following up a 2-for-3, two-RBI showing in an 8-3 loss in game one.
UTSA improved to 5-7 with the split, while North Texas moved to 4-3.
In the second game, Cato got things going with her second home run of the day and third of the season in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore Kristin Kappler was hit by a pitch from Mean Green starter Kayla Lawson and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Emily Humpal. Cato then sent a 1-0 pitch from Lawson off the flagpole in center field to give the Roadrunners a 2-0 lead.
UTSA struck for three runs in the fifth. Kappler drew a leadoff walk and freshman pinch runner Elyse Seals moved to second on a single through the left side of the infield by Humpal that chased Lawson from the circle. Cato followed with an RBI-single to center field to plate Seals. Freshman Amber Anderson drove in Humpal on a fielder’s choice ground ball up the middle and Cato came home from third on an infield single deep in the hole between third and shortstop off the bat of sophomore Dany? Holmes.
The Roadrunners put the eight-run rule into effect in the bottom of the sixth. Freshman Kristin Wehmeyer was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and back-to-back singles to left by Kappler and Humpal loaded the bases. Cato then drove in her fourth run of the day with a base hit to right center. Junior Rudi Cantu provided a bases-loaded single up the middle to drive in Kappler and Anderson ended the game with a base hit through the right side of the infield to plate Humpal with the eighth and final run.
Holmes (2-2) was masterful in the circle for UTSA, striking out a season high nine batters and allowing just six singles in the complete-game shutout. Lawson (1-1) gave up four earned runs on three hits in four-plus innings of work in the loss.
UTSA pounded out 13 hits in game one, but could not make them pay off in an 8-3 loss to the Mean Green.
After two scoreless frames, Wehmeyer singled home Anderson in the bottom of the third to give UTSA a 1-0 lead.
North Texas responded with four runs in the next half inning. Mallory Cantler drove in Anna Barren with the tying run on a double to the wall in left center before Lisa Johnson drilled a full-count pitch over the fence in left field for a three-run blast that lifted the Mean Green to a 4-1 advantage.
Cato answered with a two-run round-tripper in the bottom of the fourth that scored junior Krista Sitka, who reached on a leadoff single, but UTSA could not break through for any more runs against Jennifer Smith (2-1), who came on in relief of starter Ashley Lail after the homer and allowed just three hits in four innings in the win.
Humpal (2-4) gave up six runs on four hits and fanned four in the loss.
Five Roadrunners collected two hits apiece in the game, including Anderson, Cato, Kappler, senior Leanne Risberg and freshman Ashley Kappler.
The Roadrunners will take this weekend off in preparation for the Southland Conference opening series at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi next Tuesday-Wednesday, Feb. 24-25.
