Senior Nathalie Wallin collected her team-leading eighth win of the season. |
SAN ANTONIO ? The UTSA women's tennis team came out swinging during the second matchup of the weekend, sweeping Texas-Pan American, 7-0. Sunday's match marked the fourth whitewashing in five wins this season for the Roadrunners (5-4).
Following Saturday's loss to North Texas, head coach Erin Boisclair stressed that winning the doubles point was crucial and her players grabbed the 1-0 lead with three wins.
Senior Nathalie Wallin teamed up with junior Holly Phillips to take the first victory of the afternoon by outplaying Malin Andersen and Reetta Raty in a quick 8-1 set. Senior-freshman duo Karen Scida and Micaela Silva established the point with an 8-3 win over Stephanie Willerding and Andrea Salvetova. Senior Monika Drabkova and Caroline Dedering were also successful in their contest against Megan Bedeau and Luisa Cantu, 8-6.
"The girls came out fighting and with good attitudes," Boisclair said. "They were awesome."
UTSA continued its strong play in the singles matches.
Phillips quickly defeated Salvetova, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 4 spot to give the Runners a 2-0 edge over the Broncs. No. 1 Wallin routed Willerding in two straight 6-1 sets to bring UTSA one point closer to a victory.
The match was decided when Cantu fell to the hands of Scida at the No. 2 spot, 6-2, 6-1. Drabkova, Dedering, and Katie Ottenbreit were all victorious against UTPA. Silva also won her match in a decisive 10-5 tiebreaker that finalized the score at 7-0.
Boisclair expressed her approval.
"It was good to make a statement in the last match before conference. Winning, 7-0, is a great way to get prepared for conference play."
UTSA will open Southland Conference play on Saturday, Feb. 28, on the road against Nicholls.
