SAN ANTONIO ? The UTSA women's tennis team dropped another close match in Saturday's 5-2 loss to North Texas.
The Roadrunners fell to 4-4 on the season, while the Mean Green advanced to 5-2.
It looked grim early in the match for the Runners as UNT grabbed the doubles point in a sweep. Senior-sophomore team Karen Scida and Micaela Silva were defeated by Mandura Ranganathan and Irina Parashiv (8-6). Monika Drabkova and Caroline Dedering also fell, 8-6, to the hands of Olga Cruz and Narine Kazarova.
"Losing all three doubles matches is hard, but I do not think the girls played poorly," head coach Erin Boisclair said. "We need to win the doubles point tomorrow."
Singles action looked enlightening as UTSA seized three victories in the Nos. 2 and 4 positions, but the Runners struggled to collect the last win they would need to succeed.
Senior Natalie Wallin continued her singles winning streak by defeating Paula Dinuta in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Junior Holly Phillips, who is also on a singles winning streak, overwhelmed Kazarova at the No. 4 spot, 6-4, 6-2.
"We need to get a 'W' against UTPA tomorrow," Boisclair said. "Close losses are tough, but the girls worked hard."
UTSA will return to action to face Texas-Pan American at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the UTSA Tennis Center. Admission is free to all UTSA home matches.
