? Stephen F. Austin box score

? Baylor box score

Sophomore Kristin Kappler had three hits and three RBIs on Saturday at the Getterman Classic.

WACO ? Sophomore Kristin Kappler went 2-for-4 with a double and her first home run of the season to help lead UTSA to a 7-3 victory over Stephen F. Austin on Saturday at the Getterman Classic. In the second game of the day for the Roadrunners,  Kappler drove in two more runs, but Baylor got three hits apiece from Nicole Wesley and Brette Regan in a 7-3 victory for the Bears.

Kappler’s productive day with the bat helped lead the Roadrunners (3-6) to a 10-hit output at the plate in the non-conference victory over their Southland rival Lady Jacks (2-6). Freshman Kristin Wehmeyer launched her second long ball of the year, while junior Kelly Cato, who was 2-for-2, also went yard for the first time.

Sophomore Emily Humpal (2-2) was solid in the circle, striking out five and allowing just one earned run on seven hits in the complete-game effort.

UTSA wasted little time in building a comfortable lead with a four-run top of the first. Junior Rudi Cantu led off with an infield single, stole second and scored on a two-out, RBI-single to left field by sophomore Danye Holmes. Kappler then doubled to left center to push Holmes to third and both runners came home on a single by senior Leanne Risberg that was mishandled by the right field. Junior Krista Sitka drove in Risberg, who advanced all the way to third on the previous play, with an infield single.

The Lady Jacks picked up a run on a single by Briana Bishop that plated  Jessica Arana, who had singled, but the Roadrunners got the run right back, as Cato led off the bottom of the second with a solo blast over the fence in right center.

Kappler pushed the lead to 6-1 with a solo homer to right in the third and Wehmeyer blasted a solo bomb to left to lead off the fourth to make it 7-1.

SFA threatened in the bottom of the frame, but only managed a pair of unearned runs on a one-out, bases-loaded double by Karissa Jones. Humpal worked out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts and UTSA held on for the win from there.

Cantu and freshman Ashley Kappler collected two hits apiece to lead the UTSA offense in the second game, a 7-3 loss to Baylor (4-2).

Playing as the visiting team in their home park, the Bears jumped on the board first with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Wesley singled on the infield and stole second with one out and scored on an infield base hit and error off the bat of Regan. Courtney Oberg then singled home Regan with a base knock to center field to make it 2-0.

Baylor tacked on two more runs in the third behind another base hit from Regan and Alex Colyer drove in a run in the fifth to give the Bears a 5-0 advantage.

UTSA broke through in the bottom of the fifth. Cato drew a leadoff walk and Ashley Kappler singled to left to chase starter Whitney Canion from the circle. Freshman Amber Anderson then reached on an error by the third baseman to load the bases for Kristin Kappler, who delivered with a two-run single to center.

The Bears got the two runs back in the top of the seventh, as Walker singled, reached second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a fielder’s choice and scored on another wild pitch.  A sacrifice fly by Oberg pushed the lead to 7-2.

UTSA plated a run in its final at-bat, as Cantu doubled to left, moved to third on a groundout and scored on  a wild pitch.

Canion, the Big 12 co-Pitcher of the Week after leading Baylor to a 1-0 victory over then-No. 1 Florida, struck out seven  and allowed two runs on five hits in 4.1 inning in running her record to 3-1 on the season. Humpal, who worked all 14 frames for the Roadrunners on Saturday, struck out a pair, but gave up six earned runs on 12 hits in falling to 2-3.

The Roadrunners will face Northwestern State at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
