CONWAY, Ark. ?Senior guard Monica Gibbs’ second triple-double of the season ? 18 points, a career-high 15 assists and 13 rebounds ? and senior
forward Onika Anderson’s career-high 28 points led UTSA past Central
Arkansas, 97-89, in overtime on Wednesday night.
Anderson also hauled in 10 rebounds for her 10th
double-double of the season, while sophomore guard Jordan Stark grabbed
a season-high 11 boards. Meanwhile, junior guard Alysse Davis chipped
in with a career-high 22 on the strength of six 3-pointers. Sophomore
guard Amber Gregg and senior forward Ryba Pawlaczyk added 15 and 11
points, respectively.
The Roadrunners (15-7, 8-1 SLC) extended their
winning streak to six games (13 of 14) overall and the 97 points scored was a
season best for UTSA.
The Sugars Bears (6-17, 2-8 SLC) were led by Nakeia Guiden’s 22 points, while Destinee Rogers netted 18.
UTSA started off the extra period by scoring the first
five points to take a 89-84 advantage with less than two minutes
showing on the clock. UCA pulled within two, 91-89, on Carnisha
Bolden’s 3-pointer with 48 seconds left, but Davis' sixth three ball on the
night pushed the lead back to five and the Roadrunners went 3-for-4 from
the free throw line to clinch the victory.
Central Arkansas went on a 13-5 run within the five
minutes of the second half to make it a four point game at 50-46.
Anderson scored seven of UTSA's next nine points to highlight a 9-0
run that extended the lead to 59-50 with 14:01 remaining. The Roadrunners
grabbed their largest lead of the game at 71-56 when Gibbs connected on
a layup at the nine-minute mark. The Sugar Bears ended the stanza with a 28-13
run over the final eight minutes to send the contest into overtime.
UTSA jumped out to the 13-4 lead within the first four
minutes of the first half. UCA then
used a 10-5 to cut the Roadrunner lead to 29-21 with 6:57 to go. The Roadrunners closed out the half with a 16-12 spurt for a 45-33 halftime lead.
Gibbs' first triple-double, the third in school history, came on Dec. 6 against
Huston-Tillotson (19 points, 13 assists, 12 rebounds).
UTSA returns to the Convocation Center for a 4 p.m. matchup against UT Arlington on Saturday. The game will be televised by Time Warner Cable (channel 50).
