NEW ORLEANS, La. ? Senior Kyle Collins sits tied for ninth place after posting rounds of 71 and 76 (147) on Monday at the Mardi Gras Invitational, which is being played at the TPC Louisiana Golf Course.
“Overall it was a tough day for us because of the windy conditions and hole locations,” head coach John Knauer said. “They were few par scores throughout the day and I think we feel we are there despite our finish today. We had three guys that played some good holes as the day progressed."
The Roadrunners turned in scores of 302 and 307 for a total of 609 and they reside in ninth place in the team standings.
Collins, who was the Roadrunners' top finisher in four of the five fall events, is the lone player in the top 10 for UTSA. The San Antonio product trails co-leaders Ryan Blackburn (Mercer) and Vaita Guillaume (Campbell) by five strokes.
Meanwhile, junior transfer Ryan Kiel responded with a pair of 76s in his UTSA debut and is tied for 27th with a 152. Sophomore Lewis Chong shot a 78 in the opening round and improved that number by two strokes (76) to close out his day in a tie for 37th.
The Roadrunners return to action on Tuesday morning for the final 18 holes.
