UTEP ends Roadrunners winning streak on Sunday

Junior Holly Phillips won a three-set thriller on Sunday.

EL PASO ? The UTSA women’s tennis team saw its four-match winning streak come to an end with a 4-3 setback at UTEP on Sunday.

The Miners (3-1) had the upper hand early when they swept all three doubles contests to collect the first point of the match.

Senior Karen Scida and freshman Micaela Silva fell to Weronika Bloczysnka and Megan Pritchard, 8-3, at the top spot. Meanwhile, senior Natalie Wallin and junior Holly Phillips sent the No. 3 tilt to to a tiebreaker, but they eventually lost, 9-8, Ximena Fuentes and Marina DeLuca.

UTSA (4-3) rallied to win three of the six singles matches, but the double point proved to be the tiebreaker.

Wallin defeated Trieweiler at the No. 2 spot in a straight set (6-0, 7-5), while Phillips recovered from an early deficit and captured a super-tie breaker victory over Pritchard (2-6, 7-5, 10-8). Dedering also was successful in her contest against Fuentes after she retired in the third set of their No. 6 contest.

The Roadrunners will host North Texas and Texas-Pan American next weekend at the UTSA Tennis Complex. The matches are slated to start at noon on Saturday and 1 p.m. the following afternoon.
