HOUSTON ? Junior Bryan Ugochukwu and sophomore Jayde James both posted runner-up finishes in the 800 meters to highlight the men's and women's track & field day of action at Saturday's Houston All-Comers at Bill Yeoman Fieldhouse.
Ugochukwu finished second in 1:53.74, which was the third-fastest time of his career, while James turned in a personal-best time of 2:17.68 to win her section. Her mark was a four-second improvement from her previous PR of 2:21.50 recorded at the Hilton Memorial last month and also ranks as the second-fastest in the Southland Conference behind junior teammate Dana Mecke’s 2:14.37.
Other action for the Roadrunners included junior Corey Vargas' sixth-place effort in the mile (4:27.30) and freshman Greg Gabrisch sixth-place performance in the pole vault (15-1/4.60m). Senior Shanelle Slaughter sped to a 7.97 clocking in the 60m to finishfourth in her section and 24th overall, while freshman Rebecca Crain timed aseason-best 59.87 for third in her 400m heat and 14th overall.
UTSA, which will take a break from competition next week, is back in action on Feb. 20-21 when it returns to Houston for the fourth and final time this season for the Southland Conference Championships. The men will be seeking their fourth league title in a row, which would rank only second to Lamar's six consecutive crowns from 1980-85.
