KINDER, La. ? Junior Madison McClain shot a two-round total of 149 (74-75) to lead the UTSA women's golf team on Saturday afternoon at the Koasati Pines Classic.
McClain sits in third in the individual standings, while the Roadrunners' score of 617 (306-311) has them in second place on the team leaderboard.
“The team played very solid today in very windy conditions,” first-year head coach Carrie Cole said. “It really tested their mental toughness and ability to stay focused. The girls had a first-class attitude all day and again put themselves in position to win a golf tournament. Today was a good start for us, but it's just a start. From here on out, we will strive to get better. The team is capable of much more and I am looking forward to watching its progress this spring.”
UTSA trails only McNeese State, which turned in a day-one scorecard of 615.
McClain is one shot off the pace of co-leaders Sydney Liles of Texas State and Channing Norton from Lamar, who turned in 148s. Meanwhile, senior Laura Baker is tied for seventh place at 151, (73-78) while junior Shelly Martinez sits in 22nd following her rounds of of 76 and 81 (157).
The final round is scheduled for Sunday morning.
