PORTLAND, Ore. ? The UTSA men’s tennis team wrapped up their two-day trip to Oregon on Sunday with a 5-0 loss at Portland.

The Roadrunners had a shot to take a quick 1-0 lead, but they lost in the third doubles match to go down a point. At the No. 3 spot, junior Jorge Delgado and sophomore Max Stratmann lost to Nick Wales and Geoff Hernandez, 8-5. Junior Rodrigo Morgado continued his solid play on Sunday, pairing with sophomore Daniel Moreiras to record UTSA’s sole victory in their No. 2 contest, 8-3, against Nikoloz Kurdadze and Bryan Thorp. Junior Andre Moreira and freshman Pedro Zanotelli could not hold off Evan Schleining and Filip Zivkovic at the No. 1 position, losing 8-5 and giving the Pilots the doubles point.

“We got off to a slow start again today in doubles,” head coach Dr. Oliver Trittenwein said after the match. “You just can’t afford to get behind early against talented teams. Just like yesterday, they played a little smarter and better than we did. That’s all there is to it.”

In singles action, the Pilots took the first four matches before the final two were pulled off the court because of time constraints. At No. 1, Morgado fell to Joel Kincaid, 6-4, 6-4, giving Portland an early 2-0 lead. Moreira did not compete, so the rest of the team jumped up one spot in the lineup. Zanotelli, playing at the No. 2 spot, fell to Zivkovic, 6-2, 6-4. Delgado lost his No. 3 match to Thorp, 6-2, 6-4. Stratmann was defeated by Hernandez, 6-2, 6-0, in the final match of the afternoon.

The Roadrunners are back in action next weekend when they host Laredo Community College at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the UTSA Tennis Complex. They will compete against St. Edward’s at 2 p.m. the following day.
