ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ? Gold-medal performances by sophomores Benga Adeeko and Kyle Kaase in the 60-meter dash and pole vault, respectively, and a school-record performance by freshman Greg Gabrisch in the pole vault (invitational division) highlighted UTSA's second consecutive weekend of strong showings at Saturday's Cherry & Silver Invitational.
Adeeko posted the two of the four-fastest times of the day in winning the 60 meters. He opened the morning by posting a then-personal-best time of 6.85 in winning the third preliminary heat, which was tops in the 28-man field. The San Antonio native then followed that effort by crossing the tape first with a 6.82 in the finals, tying the fourth-best performance in school history. Freshman Darryl White gave the Roadrunners two of the top three runners in the event when he placed third with his time of 6.84, mere four one-thousandths of a second behind runner up Isiah Sweeney of Houston. He entered the final with the fourth-fastest prelims time (6.952 Junior All-American Teddy Williams recorded the second-fastest preliminary time at 6.88, but he did not compete in the final.

Meanwhile, Kaase tied for the pole vault title with his
personal-best clearance of 15-3 (4.65m), which ties him for the fourth-best
performance in school history. The Spring native cleared the first two heights on his first attempt but was unsuccessful when the bar was raised to 15-9 (4.80m). In invitational division, Gabrisch placed 11th but broke the program's 14-year-old record with his vault of 16-0 ? (4.90m). The Kingwood native bettered Russell Dauphin's former mark of 15-11 ? (4.86m), which was set during the 1995 campaign.
Senior Will Vese just came up short in his attempt at gold in the 60-meter hurdles. The Houston native recorded a third-place showing when he stopped the clock in 8.09. He qualified for the final after peeling off the fastest preliminary time at 8.03. The reigning Southland Conference Athlete of the Week won the event at last weekend's season-opening Leonard Hilton Memorial.
Other top performances included junior Bryan Ugochukwu, who raced to the fourth-fastest time in school annals (1:52.50) in placing seventh in the 800 meters, and sophomore P.J. McGowen, who finished ninth in the long jump with the fourth-best leap in program history (22-7 ?/6.90m). Both marks were personal bests. In the high jump, junior Johnathan Whittaker and freshman Jeffery Herron finished third and fourth, respectively. Both athletes matched their career highs set a week ago. Whittaker cleared 6-10 ? (2.09m/t-No. 3 in UTSA history), while Herron was leaped 6-8 ? (2.04m).
UTSA is back in action next Saturday when it heads back to the Bayou City for the Houston Invitational/Multis.
