DALLAS ?The UTSA women’s tennis suffered a 5-2 loss at SMU in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Turpin Tennis Stadium.
The Mustangs (2-0) collected the doubles point by sweeping all three matches. Junior Monika Drabkova and sophomore Caroline Dedering fell 8-2 against Kristen Reid and Monica Neveklovska 8-2 at the No. 2 position. Natalia Bubien and Pavi Francis clinched the point with a 8-6 win versus senior Karen Scida and freshman Micaela Silva at the top spot. The tandem of junior Holly Phillips and senior Nathalie Wallin dropped a 9-8 (7-3) heartbreaker at No. 3 for the Roadrunners (0-2).
In singles action, SMU won four of the six matches. The Mustangs grabbed a 2-0 advantage when Neveklovska won her match, 6-0, 6-1, against freshman Katie Ottenbreit at No. 6.
However, Wallin, who collected her first singles win of the season, cut the deficit, 2-1, with her straight-set win versus Nicole Briceno at the No. 2 slot (7-6, 6-1). SMU sealed the match with victories at Nos. 3 and 5 positions.
Scida lost a tough three-set match against Bubien. The Tucuman, Argentina, native fell in the first set, 6-3, but took the second, 6-4. However; Bubien collected the triumph with a 6-2 win in the final stanza.
Meanwhile, Phillips picked up the 7-5 win in the first frame, but Francis won the next two sets (6-2, 7-5) to clinch the match.
The Roadrunners return home for a pair of matches against Laredo Community College on Jan. 31 and St. Edward’s the following day.
