SAN ANTONIO ? The UTSA men's and women's track & field teams will be back in action on Saturday when they compete at the Cherry & Silver Invitational, which will be hosted by the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
The 14-event field schedule is slated to start at 8 a.m. (MT), while the 23 track events
are scheduled to begin one hour later. Some of the top teams in the nation are participating, including No. 10 BYU, No. 15 Arizona (women), No. 17 Stanford (women), No. 19 Arizona (men) and No. 25 Stanford (men). The remainder of the 11-squad field includes Division II power Adams State, California, Colorado School of Mines, Houston,
New Mexico, New Mexico State (women), Portland State and UTSA.

The Roadrunners are coming off an opening weekend that saw them finish second on the men's side at the Leonard Hilton Memorial. Senior Will Vese provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships with his winning time of 7.90 in the 60-meter hurdles. He then was named Southland Conference Athlete of the Week on Wednesday. Meanwhile, junior Johnathan Whittaker placed second in the high jump
with a personal-best 6-10 ? (2.09m), tying him for the third-highest
leap in school history, and freshman Jeff Herron was fourth with his
jump of 6-8 ? (2.04m). Senior Gaston Griffin was the other Roadrunner
to post a second-place showing, as he circled the oval twice in 49.52
in the 400 meters.
For the women, junior Dana Mecke and senior Ashley Jackson
posted top-six finishes. Mecke finished fourth in the mile with a career performance, clocking a
4:58.26 to make her the school’s No. 4 all-time performer in the event.
Meanwhile, Jackson won her heat of the 200 meters and finished sixth overall in a field of 48 sprinters, crossing in 26.15. A trio of Roadrunners also moved onto the school’s top-five performers lists. Freshman Lindsey Ngyuen, believed to be the first indoor female pole
vaulter at UTSA, established a school record with a 10-4 clearance to
tie for 13th place, while sophomore Taelor Wilson became the program’s No. 2 performer in the weight throw with a 10th-place measure of 47-5 ?. Freshman Amber Byars had a memorable UTSA debut with a 42-1 ? mark to
finish 18th in the same event (No. 4 UTSA history).
