SAN ANTONIO ?The UTSA women’s tennis team was blanked by No. 28 Denver on Friday morning at the UTSA Tennis Center in the season opener for both schools.
 
The Pioneers opened the morning by sweeping all three doubles contests. Bhavani Tirumurti and Annette Aksdal got things started with an 8-2 win against senior Nathalie Wallin and junior Holly Phillips at the No. 3 position. Senior Karen Scida and freshman Micaela Silva then suffered an 8-2 loss at the hands of Julia Bauregger and Mallory Voelker at the top spot. Ute Schnoy and Kyla Iwinski completed the sweep with their 8-3 victory against sophomore Caroline Dedering and senior Monika Drabkova.
 
In was all Denver in the six singles matches. Iwinski put the Pioneers up 2-0 with her straight-sets win against Silva (6-3, 6-3) at the No. 5 slot. Schnoy then gave DU a 3-0 cushion with her 6-1, 6-2, triumph against Drabkova at the No. 3 position. Aksdal clinched the match for the Pioneers when she dealt Wallin a 6-3, 6-0, loss at the No. 2 spot.
 
UTSA returns to action on Saturday afternoon at SMU.
