SAN ANTONIO ? Senior Travis Gabbidon and junior Richie Frohlich both posted double-doubles, but Marquez Haynes scored 20 points to lead five Mavericks with 19 or more, as UT Arlington outlasted UTSA, 100-97, in double overtime in Southland Conference action on Saturday night at the Convocation Center.

The loss snapped the Roadrunners’ (10-5, 2-1 SLC) seven-game winning streak and it was their first home setback of the season in what was their first double overtime contest in 10 years. The Mavericks moved to 9-7 and 2-1 with their second straight victory.

Gabbidon scored a game-high 23 points, grabbed 10 rebounds for the second straight game and dished out six assists, while Frohlich registered season highs of 14 points and 10 boards to lead five Roadrunners in double figures. Sophomore Devin Gibson posted 21 points, all after halftime, and added six rebounds, five steals and four assists, while junior Omar Johnson added 17 points, five rebounds and five dimes while battling leg cramps for most of the night. Senior Joey Shank drained five 3-pointers en route to 15 points.

Haynes scored 20 to lead UTA, while Anthony Vereen, Brandon Long, Tommy Moffitt and Ro’ger Guignard contributed 19 points apiece. Moffitt pulled down a team-high 10 boards for the Mavericks.

In a game that featured 16 ties and 19 lead changes, neither team led by more eight points.

Trailing 67-61 with four minutes to play, UTSA used a 7-0 run to take its first lead since the 8:09 mark of the second half.

Gibson’s steal of Guignard and layup with just over a minute to play gave the Roadrunners a 70-69 lead. Vereen answered with a short turnaround jumper 15 seconds later, but Gibson responded. The Houston native converted a four-point play, draining a three from the right wing that he was fouled on and making the free throw to put UTSA back up, 74-71, with 34 seconds left.

Guignard came up with a loose ball off a missed 3-pointer and connected from behind the arc to knot the score with 19 ticks remaining. UTSA was unable to get a shot off on the final possession of regulation, sending the game to overtime.

The first overtime saw UTSA grab an 82-81 advantage on a trey by Johnson with just under two minutes remaining. UTA made four consecutive free throws to go up by three with a minute on the clock. Gibson then converted a three-point play after being fouled on a layup by Vereen to tie the game. Johnson had a good look from the right wing, but his shot fell just short as time expired.

Gabbidon gave the Roadrunners a 90-89 lead on another long distance shot, but the Mavericks responded with a 6-2 run capped by a Long layup with 1:28 to play. A Moffitt lay-in put UTA up, 97-93, with 52 ticks on the clock, but Gibson quickly answered with a layup of his own six seconds later.

Gabbidon was whistled for his fifth personal foul ? one of three Roadrunners (Bonney, Frohlich) to foul out, ? to send Haynes to the line, where he converted a pair. Johnson pulled UTSA to within 99-97 with a layup with 20 seconds left, but Long made 1-of-2 freebies and the Roadrunners could not connect from downtown in the final seconds.

UTSA’s last overtime game was a 103-96 win at Texas State on Feb. 23, 2008, and the last double overtime contest was a 92-90 loss at Sam Houston State on Feb. 18, 1999, which actually was the second of two straight double OT games.

UTSA shot 43.8 percent (35-80) for the game and made 10 3-pointers, but only converted 17-of-29 (58.6%) from the line. The Mavs were at 50 percent (38-76) from the floor behind 50 points in the paint and 19-of-26 (73.1%) from the charity stripe.

The Roadrunners step out of league play for the final time this regular season when they host Texas-Pan American at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 21.
