PRAIRIE VIEW ? The UTSA men’s tennis team kicked off its 2009 campaign with a 7-0 shutout at Prairie View A&M on Thursday afternoon in the season opener for both schools.
The Roadrunners swept all three doubles matches for the early 1-0 lead. The duo of junior Rodrigo Morgado and sophomore Daniel Moreiras defeated Jose Garcia and K. Nyatoti 8-1, while junior Jorge Delgado and sophomore Max Stratmann clinched the doubles point with their 8-1 victory at the No. 3 position. Senior Andre Moreira and freshman Pedro Zanotelli completed the sweep with their 8-4 victory over J. Chavez and C. Jordan at the top spot.
UTSA then swept all six singles matches. Delgado put UTSA up 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-2, win against Jordan. Meanwhile, Zanotelli and freshman Shariq Khan, who was making his Roadrunners debut after transferring from Prairie View A&M last month, both collected a straight-set wins at the No. 3 and No. 6 slots, respectively. Moreiras made quick work of Mayfield (6-3, 6-1), while Moreira and Morgado collected wins at the top two positions.
The Roadrunners continue their season-opening road trip on Friday evening at Rice.
