Cooper?s career night leads UTSA past Nicholls, 86-33

SAN ANTONIO ? Freshman forward Cori Cooper came off the bench to score a career-high 21 points and senior guard Monica Gibbs collected the 30th double-double of her career (16 points/game-high 10 rebounds) to lead UTSA past Nicholls, 86-33, in Southland Conference action on Wednesday night at the Convocation Center.

The Roadrunners (9-6, 2-0 SLC), who extended their winning streak to seven games, put on a defensive show in holding the Colonels (0-13, 0-2 SLC) to just 14 field goals and 33 points, including 13 in the second half. It was the fourth-largest margin of victory in school history. UTSA also collected a season-best 57 rebounds, which led to 50 points in the paint.

The Birds set season highs in field goal (53.4/31-of-58) and free throw percentage (79.2/19-of-24), including making 12-of-13 (92.3 percent) from the line in the second half.

Cooper’s 21 points came on a 7-for-9 shooting performance, as UTSA’s bench outscored Nicholls, 48-7. Meanwhile, junior  guard Alysse Davis chipped in with career-high 15 points to go along with seven boards.

UTSA pushed its lead to 31 (53-22) after a 13-2 spurt within the first four-and-a-half minutes of the second half. A Tiffany Jones layup ended a four-minute scoreless drought for the Colonels to make the score 55-24 with 13:20 left. The Roadrunners then closed out the game with a 31-7 run to cruise to the 53-point win.

UTSA opened the game by scoring 19 of the first 25 points, as Davis and senior forward Ryba Pawlaczyk netted six points apiece. The Roadrunners then pushed their lead to 16 on junior forward Valencia Cottom’s layup with eight minutes showing on the clock and they headed to the locker room with a 41-20 advantage.

Jones and Danielle Douglas led Nicholls with eight points apiece.

UTSA hits the road for a 4 p.m. matchup at UT Arlington on Saturday.
