SAN ANTONIO ? Senior guard Monica Gibbs recorded UTSA's first-ever triple-double with 19 points, 13 assists and 12 rebounds to lift the Roadrunners past Huston-Tillotson, 93-55, on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
Senior forwards Ryba Pawlaczyk (career-high 24 points, 11 rebounds) and Onika Anderson (20 points, 11 rebounds) both posted double-doubles for UTSA (2-5). The Roadrunners held a 56-33 rebounding advantage and outscored the Rams (0-7) 42-24 in the paint.
HTU was led by Kevetta Williams’ 22 points, while Ashley Bell chipped in with a dozen.
UTSA opened the second half with a 17-5 run to give it a 63-30 cushion with 13:29 remaining. A Williams three-ball pulled Huston-Tillotson within 30, but the Roadrunners posted their largest lead of the game at 84-39 with six minutes to go.
Gibbs and Anderson combined for eight of the first 10 points of the game to get things started for UTSA. The Roadrunners then increased their lead 20-5 on a Pawlaczyk bucket with 12:21 left in the half. Huston-Tillotson cut UTSA’s deficit to seven (20-13) with an 8-0 run. Bell then netted six consecutive points to get HTU within five with less than five minutes to play. However, UTSA scored the next 16 points and took a 46-25 advantage into the locker room.
The Roadrunners return to action on Friday, Dec. 19, at the Cozumel Cup.
