Strong second half lifts Roadrunners past Colorado State

Junior guard Alysse Davis drained four 3-pointers on Monday night.

SAN ANTONIO ?  The UTSA women's basketball team overcame a nine-point second-half deficit and scored a 67-58 win against Colorado State in game two of the Wells Fargo New Year's Classic on Monday night at the Convocation Center.

Senior guard Monica Gibbs led way with her 28th career double-double. The Stillwater, Okla., native posted game highs of 22 points and a dozen rebounds for the Roadrunners (4-6). Junior guard Alysse Davis, who went 4-of-5 from downtown, netted 14 points, while sophomore guard Amber Gregg chipped in with 11 on the night.

Zoi Simmons led the Rams (3-8) with team bests of 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Chatil Van Grinsven added 10 points.  

UTSA went on a 8-0 run to pull within one of Colorado State's lead (37-36) with 17:10 to go in the second half. Davis' second trey of the night gave the Roadrunners a 41-39 advantage with 13 minutes left. A Carine Reimink free throw capped off a 7-0 run for the Rams, but back-to-back buckets by sophomore guard Whitney York and Gregg gave the Roadrunners a three-point lead with just under eight minutes to play.

A Simmons jumper and Reimink's three-point play gave the Rams a 52-48 lead with 5:27 left, but UTSA responded with a 5-0 run to take a one-point edge, but Simmons' pull-up jumper put the Rams up one with under four to go.

However, Davis connected on a pair of threes within a minute-and-a-half span to give the Roadrunners a six-point lead with 1:51 remaining. UTSA then sealed the game down the stretch, going 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. 

Colorado State scored the first five points of the game to grab the lead within the first minute of the first half. Gregg's three-ball knotted the game at 10 with 14:38 to go. The Rams then went on a 9-0 run to push their lead 19-10 at the 11-minute mark. Gregg's second 3-pointer of the half ended a four-minute scoreless drought for UTSA and pushed the Birds within eight at 21-13.

Davis gave the Roadrunners their first lead of the game at 22-21 with a 3-pointer from the left wing, but Colorado State retook the lead on a put-back basket by Simmons with 5:54 left. Senior forward Ryba Pawlaczyk connected on a 3-pointer as the shot clock expired to tie it at 25 with under four minutes to play. Simmons then netted four of Colorado State's next eight points to give the Rams a 33-28 lead at the half.

UTSA returns to action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night against High Point.
