COZUMEL, Mexico ? Senior forwards Onika Anderson and Ryba Pawlaczyk posted double-doubles to lead the UTSA women’s basketball team to a 74-62 win over Oral Roberts in the final day of the Cozumel Cup on Saturday.
Anderson scored a team-high 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Pawlaczyk chipped in with 15 points and a game-high dozen boards for the Roadrunners (3-6). Meanwhile, senior guard Monica Gibbs added 13 points and sophomore guards Amber Gregg and Whitney York netted 10 apiece.
Gibbs and York also dished out game-best six assists, as the Runners tallied 17 dimes on the night. UTSA held a 43-27 rebounding advantage, which led to 16 second-chance points.
Mariana Camargo led the Golden Eagles (6-6) with a game-high 22 points, while Janae Voelker added 11.
Georgia Jones made a pair of three balls to pull Oral Roberts within seven of USTA at 44-37 with 15:25 to go in the second half. A layup by Pawlaczyk and a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Cierra Martin increased lead to double digits at the 14-minute mark. However, the Golden Eagles used an 8-0 run to get within one at the midway point of the frame.
The Roadrunners responded with an 11-2 run over the next four minutes to push their lead to 10 (62-52). Camargo nailed two buckets for Oral Roberts to cut the deficit to four with under five minutes to play.
UTSA closed out the game on a 14-4 run and held on for the 12-point victory.
The Birds return home to for the Wells Fargo New Year’s Classic, which will be played from Dec. 29-30 at the Convocation Center.
